Laying sheets

Sheets can be laid left to right or right to left*. Sheets should be laid perpendicular to and starting at the eaves. Don’t forget to leave an overhang to go into the gutter or beyond the wall plate (usually 50mm (2”) is sufficient.

* Please be aware that tile effect sheets can only be laid one way, Wave Tile is right to left lay. This is due to the gutter detail and the capillary groove for side laps.

When fitting non coated galvanised sheets we also recommend degreasing the sheets to remove any traces of rolling oil prior to fitting the sheets. As galvanised steel weathers the finish will become less consistent but removing rolling oil can help give the steel a more consistent weathered finish. Storing sheets indoors or under cover will also reduce the risk of water ingress between the sheets which can accelerate weathering in patches where water settles.

If you are unsure about storage and handling of your sheets please contact us for advice.

Quick tip: Prevailing wind direction may be used to determine your direction of lay. Please bear in mind, however, that wind directions can change and the direction of lay is ultimately up to the fitter

When laying sheets on an apex roof (double sided) remember to leave a gap of approx. 2” (50mm) at the ridge (tip of the apex). Also, if you are using profiled g.r.p rooflights on an apex roof and wish to keep them in the same position on both sides you will have to lay right to left on one side and left to right on the other. (Tile effect sheets do not have profiled rooflights available)

Below we have provided numbered diagrams showing you a recommended lay pattern for each direction of lay.

Alternative lay patterns may be used depending on the profile of the sheet being fitted. If you are unsure about lay patterns please speak to a qualified roofer or contact our technical team before attempting to lay and fix the cladding as mistakes made at this point could result in the need to order additional sheets.
